  • In an Instant

A compilation of real stories, unfortunately this does happen...you may never think it could happen to you....   Many of these stories are older, the technology exists today to be able to track your child if the unthinkable happens.. Child Alarms and GPS Trackers

I am sorry I cannot speak of this from a viewpoint of my own. But a woman I know, her brother was kidnapped back in the 70's. Unfortunately it wasn't a story with a happy ending. It isn't known whether he "willingly" accompanied the people who lured him or he was taken by will. He wasn't seen as a kid who would run away or be taken by will, he was pretty scrappy for his age. However, you must remember things regarding strangers and trust were different at that time. These were the days before we learned from serial killers and how you couldn't trust strangers anymore.

He was ultimately murdered in one of the most infamous murder rings in history, in Texas. I know her parents loved their son and did everything they could to find him. At home, it was chaos. They couldn't really do much as a family anymore. They told the police but back then they always said it was a case of a runaway teenager. Either it was the laziness of the police at the time, the frequency of teens running away, or a combination of both, but either way they did nothing. Not even when more kids started disappearing from the neighborhood. Not even when sometimes, two kids disappeared from the same family. It was a terrible failure on the police's part. Families were driven apart by the disappearances from their son. What was even more distressing was when the woman's family received a letter from their son, telling them he had supposedly found a good job and would not be coming home, he was happy there. He said he loved them very much. In reality, this was a note he was forced to write by his killer. It is very sad what happened.

His family looked all over for him. They asked some of his friends, but many of his friends were missing too. They put up missing posters and I remember her telling me that a lot of her holidays and birthdays were ruined because of how she thought it'd be if her brother was still around. Same goes with any event they had to celebrate as a family.

He was ultimately kidnapped because his killer was a pedophile and murderer who preyed on young boys to satisfy his selfish desires. There were lots of boys in that neighborhood at the time, and it was a time of little suspicion. People could be lured easily or kidnapped without too much notice. A lot of young teens ran away from home to find work or a better future, views were changing on things back then.

I don't know if this a story you wanted but I thought it tied in closely to the subject. I am involved in quite a few support groups where many of the members are family members of victims who were lost to homicide. There is no describing the grief families or parents go through. Trust me. There is no way to ever express it. You may think there will be closure in the end but there isn't. They can only try to move on but never will.

I was kidnapped off the street in front of my home at age 4, by a tall dark man who explained that he was my real father. He offered me a Coke to drink and I told him no because it burned my nose. He offered my beverage of choice and I got into his car.

I hope all parents have been paying close attention. I had not been trained to be wary of strangers, not to speak to strangers, not to allow strangers near me.

He made me get down on the floor of the car with the rifle as he drove and drove. I didn't get my beverage of choice.

As it turned out he actually was my father.
He didn't intend to harm me in any way.
He was not prosecuted for kidnapping. Not sure how illegal it was back in those pretty olden days.

I was disappeared for several months before being located where I had been deposited for safekeeping.
I've retained a few vivid olfactory and snapshot memories of the period. Mostly I retained the sense that my life could change hugely, in an instant, and without notice and that I could and would be on my own.

A few years from the end of his life, at a time when I had him near me in an assisted living facility, my father apologized for a rather reckless part of his 'big kidnapping scheme". I hadn't known or maybe remembered, about the really reckless part until then, won't share here.

During her life my mother spoke only of the trip by Greyhound bus, two states away, to retrieve me, never of worrying.

I'm now 14 years old. I was kidnapped from the time I was 3 to the time I was 5. It was full of confusion. My mother is who kidnapped me. i always asked where daddy was or why this man was hitting my mommy. The cops found me the first day I started school. They got me from school and took me home to my father. When I got to be about 12 years old I told my father that I didn't know what happened to me when I was a young child. That's when he told me my mother had kidnapped me.

This is the first time I've ever talked about the 1996 kidnapping of my son.. It's still painful for me now, 16 years later.

I was a wealthy businessman living in New York City with my beautiful wife and our son Sean. Our world was perfect until Sean was kidnapped.

Our son was kidnapped because of my wealth. I felt incredibly guilty about this for years; I had failed to do the only thing a father must do: protect his son.

I went through a roller-coaster of emotions — guilt, fear, anger, despair. The kidnappers wanted $2MM but I refused to play their game.

The NYPD was no help at all — in the end it turned out that an NYPD detective was responsible for the kidnapping. I had to take the law into my own hands.

In the end, with the help of the FBI I was able to save Sean and take down the terrible people who tried to destroy my family.

  • Mace

The following is another  story how the Mace Pepper Baton was used.

Christy waited tables at a hip little bistro a few blocks from her apartment.  Though she loved her neighborhood, she always prepared for the unexpected.

One night, one of the diners got a little out of hand. She could put up with rude customers, and she could even tolerate patrons who had a little too much to drink.

She and her boss agreed that anyone who tried to lay hands on her or on any of the wait staff would end up enjoying the rest of their meal "to go."

So her boss ejected a customer who looked like a rumpled college professor after he tried to pinch Christy's bottom. The guy created a huge stink, but the customers applauded when he fell down the steps and landed on the sidewalk with a thud.

Later that night, after Christy banked out and counted her tip money, she headed back down the street to her place. She thought she heard footsteps behind her, but saw nobody when she swung around.

Another block away from the restaurant, she thought she heard a trash can rattle. Still, she couldn't see anyone in the shadows.

Only a few steps away from her building's front door, Christy heard someone sneeze. She whipped around to see the drunken customer from earlier that night.

He lunged at her, shouting, "I'll show you!"

Instead of bolting for the door - she wouldn't have made it in time, anyway - she pulled out her keys. Instead of a usual keychain, Christy carries a Mace Pepper Baton. It's small enough to fit in a purse, and durable enough to inflict pain on an attacker.

As the drunken patron grabbed for her hair, Christy ducked down and slammed the Pepper Baton across his kneecap. Wincing in pain, he buckled over and made another swipe at her. She retaliated by holding onto the baton and swinging her keys against his face.

Stumbling, the attacker made one last grab. Christy pointed the baton at him, unleashing its secret weapon - a blast of debilitating pepper spray.

Christy's attacker crouched on the sidewalk while she dialed 9-1-1 on her cell phone.

"Next time," Christy said, "stick to what's on the menu."

  • Through the Eyes of a Rapist

Through the Eyes of a Rapist

Recently, rapists and date rapists in prison were interviewed on what they look for in a potential victim.  Here are some important revelations:

    1)  The first thing men look for in a potential victim is hairstyle. They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail, bun, braid or other hairstyle that can easily be grabbed. They also likely to go after a woman with long hair.  Women with short hair are not common targets.

    2)  The second thing men look for is clothing. They will look for women whose clothing is easy to remove quickly. Many of them carry scissors around specifically to cut clothing.

    3)  They look for a woman on her cell phone, searching through her purse or doing other activities while walking because she is off-guard and can be easily overpowered.

    4)  Men are most likely to attack and rape in the early morning between 5:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.

    5)  The Number One place women are abducted from or attacked is grocery store parking lots.
    Number Two: office parking lots/garages.
    Number Three: public restrooms.

    6)  These men are looking to grab a woman and quickly move her to another location where they don't have to worry about getting caught.

    7)  Only 2% said they carried weapons because rape carries a 3-5 years sentence but rape using a weapon is 15-20 years.

    8)  If you put up any kind of a fight at all, they get discouraged because it only takes a minute or two for them to realize that going after you isn't worth it because it will be time-consuming and, also, increases their likelihood of being caught.

    9)  These men said they would not pick on women who have umbrellas or other similar objects that can be used from a distance in their hands. Keys are NOT a deterrent because you have to get really close to the attacker to use them as a weapon.  The idea is to convince these guys you're not worth it.

    10)  Several defense mechanisms mentioned are these:  If someone is following behind you on a street or in a garage or with you in an elevator or stairwell, look them in the face and ask them a question or make small talk.  “What time is it?” or “I can’t believe it’s so cold” or “Think we’re in for a bad winter?”  Now, that you’ve seen their face and heard their voice and are more likely able to identify them in a line-up and could more certainly identify them, you lose your
    appeal as a target.

    11)  If someone is coming toward you, hold your hands in front of you and yell “STOP!” or “STAY BACK!”  Most rapists interviewed said they'd leave a woman alone if she yelled or showed she would fight back.  Again, they are looking for an EASY target!

    12)  If you carry pepper spray, yelling “I HAVE PEPPER SPRAY” and holding it out will be a deterrent.

    13)  If someone grabs you, you can't beat them with strength but you can outsmart them. If you are grabbed around the waist from behind, pinch the attacker either under the arm (between the elbow and armpit) OR in the upper inner thigh VERY, VERY HARD.
(One woman in a self-defense class said she used the underarm pinch on a guy who was trying to date rape her and was so upset she broke through the skin and tore out muscle strands.  The guy needed stitches.)  Try pinching yourself in those places as hard as you can stand it.  It hurts!

    14)  After the initial hit, always GO for the GROIN.  It’s extremely painful. You might think that you'll anger the guy and make him want to hurt you more, but these rapists said what they want is a woman who will not cause a lot of trouble.
    So, start causing trouble!

    15)  When a guy puts his hands up to you, grab his first two fingers and bend them back as far as possible with as much pressure pushing down on them as possible.  It’s very painful!

    16)  Of course the things we always hear still apply. Always be aware of your surroundings.  Take someone with you, if you can.  And if you see any odd behavior, don't dismiss it.  Go with your instincts!!!  You may feel a little silly at the time, but you'd feel much worse if the guy really was trouble.

The elbow is the strongest point on your body.
If you are close enough, use it!

If a robber asks for your wallet or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM.
Toss it away from you.  He’s more interested in your wallet or purse than you.  Chances are that he will go to retrieve it.

If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back taillights and stick your arm out the hole and wave like crazy.   The driver won’t see you, but everybody else will.  This trick has saved lives.

Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook or making a list, etc.)   DON’T DO THIS!
The predator will be watching you.  This is his perfect opportunity to get in on the passenger’s side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go.

If someone is in the car with a gun to your head, DO NOT DRIVE OFF!  Instead gun the engine and speed into anything, wrecking the car.  Your Air Bag will save you. If the person is in the back seat, they will get the worst of it.  As soon as the car crashes, bail out and run.  It is better than having them find your body in a remote location.

A.) Be aware: look around you, look into your car, at the passenger’s side floor, and in the back seat.

B.) If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger’s door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.

C.) Look at the car parked on the driver's side of your vehicle and the passenger’s side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall or work and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out.

ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot. This is especially true at NIGHT!)

If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times. And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN, preferably in a zigzag pattern!

As women, you tend to always be sympathetic.  It may get you raped or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well-educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane or a limp and often asked for help getting into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.

KNOW THIS SAFETY POINT:  A crying baby on your porch? Call the police! The police will tell you ”Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door.” Serial killers have been known to use a recorded baby’s cry to coax a woman out of her home when she thinks someone dropped off a baby.

DO NOT open the door for a crying baby.  The “Crying Baby” hoax was mentioned on the TV show America's Most Wanted when they profiled a serial killer in Louisiana.

Forward this article on to all the women you know.  It may save a life.

  • How 90 dollars went missing

    Ernie hated days like this.

Earlier, a biker guy came in for a lighter. When Ernie grabbed the right one from the display next to the cash register, his entire inventory spilled all over the floor.

Even after the customer helped Ernie clean up most of the mess, there were still lighters everywhere for the rest of the afternoon.

Then, this little college girl came in to break a hundred by buying a pack of cigarettes. She kept changing her mind about which brand she wanted from the racks behind the counter. Ernie had to spin around so often he felt dizzy. He wondered if she even smoked, or if she was getting the pack for somebody else.

Finally, just a few minutes before closing, a couple of punk rock kids came into the store and started hassling Ernie. He tolerated them because he was a little wild in his day, too. They knocked over a few displays before finally buying some cans of soda.

With the doors locked, Ernie counted the day's receipts in the back office. A puzzled look crossed his face as he realized that ninety dollars was missing from the till. He knew he couldn't have made such a glaring mistake, so he decided to check his eye in the sky.

Ernie's nephew had installed it a few months ago. It's a….

Security camera shaped like a smoke detector

that looks straight down on the sales counter. Ernie liked it because customers didn't have to feel as if they had a camera trained on them the whole time.

And all his nephew had to do was plug it in to an outlet hidden in the drop ceiling. Its wireless transmitter sent a clear signal to Ernie's video recorder in the back.

He scanned through the tape until he saw the biker guy. Ernie watched the man help him pick up all those lighters, and the cash register drawer slowly drifted open. He must not have shut it all the way! But it didn't matter. Nobody had reached around to grab any cash.

Ernie scanned some more, and found the punk rockers. They were troublemakers, and it looked as if they were messing with the charity jar. Not only did they not steal anything, the one with the safety pin in his eyebrow actually stuck a dollar in the jar when he thought nobody was looking.

On the verge of giving up and accepting his huge mistake, something caught Ernie's eye. It was the cigarette girl. Ernie watched her lay a hundred dollar bill on the counter, and remembered how she begged him to take it. The camera had caught her switching the hundred-dollar bill on the counter for a ten- dollar bill while Ernie's back was turned. With its high resolution, the camera made it clear that the girl had conned Ernie.

He picked up the phone to call his friend at the police department.

  • Have you found that it's often the obvious that is overlooked?

    Here’s a great example….

    Mike snickered.

Sometimes his sister, Beth, had the craziest ideas. Mike was at Beth's home helping her to put her affairs back into order after her husband's death.

Today, he was photographing her valuables for insurance purposes. Beth had taken out a new policy and she wanted to keep her own records.

After Mike was finished with the pictures and preparing to head home, Beth asked him to wait -- she had two more items to photograph.

She then pulled her wedding and engagement ring from inside the flower pot that held her Easter Lilies -- the same pot that held Poinsettias last December. Mike was humored and asked her about her choice of hiding places.

Beth generally kept the flower pot sitting on the kitchen counter when it contained artificial flowers, and on the top shelf next to other empty pots when it didn't.  Mike told her that he thought the flower pot safe was an odd place for her to keep her most beloved possessions.  But, there they sat, right out in the open.

But Beth explained that the flower pot safe was, in fact, the safest place for her treasures. So safe, that her rings had recently eluded a burglar and a dishonest cousin. The burglar had found the silverware and the cousin recently took a fair amount of cash out of Beth's wall safe. The rings were not touched. She asked Mike, "Where would a burglar or a thief look first?"

After thinking about it for a moment, Mike had to admit that if he were a burglar, he wouldn't even think to look for valuables in a flower pot. He was pretty certain that a burglar would go through drawers and closets, or break into any obvious safe he or she came across.

As Mike drove home, he thought about the various reasons a flower pot safe, or any diversion safe, would be useful. He lived in a low crime area, but he had a lot of company and so did his three teenage boys. You'd like to believe that you can trust everyone, but the reality is that you simply can't.

Once he arrived home, Mike ordered two flower pot safes of his own.

  • Hidden Camera

Christina had been tracking Reverend Ripoff for years. In her job as an  investigative journalist, she had encountered some slimy people, but she always thought this guy beat them all.

A few years ago, a viewer had told her about a shady charity run by Reverend Rip that was taking donations and government grants for inner city education programs. Instead of providing state of the art computer systems for students to use at the community center, Reverend Rip's stooges some decrepit boxes of transistors that could barely add.

Christina had chased the money trail back to Reverend Rip, and it looked like his innocent followers were footing the bill fora string of four-star hotel stays and a garage full of fancy cars. But he was careful. He chose destinations far from his flock, where nobody knew his name. He tipped generously, so he could hustle out the back entrance at the first sign of a camera crew or a private detective.

Reverend Rip was slick, and he used accounting loopholes to uphold the letter of the law, so the feds couldn't do anything. Christina knew that the only way to help his deceived donors understand his true nature was to capture him on tape.

Christina's cameraman, Bill, jumped at the chance to test out a new gadget. “It," he said. “He hooked it up so that it could send a strong video signal back to their news van, or even a nearby hotel room.

That week, Christina trailed the Rev to a luxury golf resort. All she had to do was stay close by to capture footage of her target in compromising acts.

Because she stayed in public places, she wasn't violating anyone's privacy. And she got more than she bargained for when she caught the married Rev sucking face with one of the bar staff.

Whether or not it was enough evidence to convict him of fraud, the footage did make a big splash on Christiana's newscast.

The Rev abandoned his constant public lecturing in favor of a more practical, "no comment."

A few months after he packed up and left town.

Christiana's station helped raise funds for a nice set of computers for those kids -- who also learned a lesson in integrity.

  • What is date rape?

According to the University of Sciences, when non-consensual sex occurs between friends or acquaintances it is often classified as date rape. This includes when someone is unable to give consent because they are impaired, sleeping or passed out. Approximately one in four female college students have been date raped or experienced an attempted date rape situation.

The following are some statistics showing the link between alcohol and sexual assault on college campuses:

90 percent of rapes on campus have occurred when either the assailant or the victim has been drinking alcohol!

Of those victimized by "acquaintance" rape 55 percent of females and 75 percent of males admitted they were either drinking or using drugs at the time of the incident.

As many as 70 percent of college students have admitted to engaging in sexual acts as a result of drinking alcohol.
As the stats show, drinking alcohol already has a connection with sexual activity and rape on college campuses. Adding these drugs to the mix only increases the amount of sexually based criminal acts that can occur. But in these situations, leaving the victim less aware of what happened the night before.

Date rape drugs can be physically and emotionally devastating for victims. It is possible for date rape to still occur when drugs are not involved, however, the victim is a bit more agreeable and less likely to fight back when a drug has been used. There have been laws passed and awareness programs started to help stop these predators from attacking their victims. However, that has not stop sexual predators from using these drugs to incapacitate their victims and taking full advantage of the situation.

Additionally this can also happen with internet dating and or complete strangers... to those of you that are in the "dating field" women AND men, that persistent person that just won't rest until you finally go out with them for a few drinks. You might consider a date rape drug detector, a great back up incase you get that gut feeling. Also to our friends in the bar business, a good idea to keep behind the bar just incase you see something going on and you can prevent something from happening to the person the predator was about to attack, and future victims.

  • Pool opening

Its that time of year again, the weather is getting warmer, flowers are blooming. Time to get those pools open....one of the most overlooked areas when opening your pool, especially with chirldren around is a pool alarm. More than 900 children between 1 and 14 die each year in drowning accidents. In California, drowning is the number one cause of accidental death for children 1-4 years of age.
One way to prevent childhood drownings is to install an alarm on all exits from your home to the swimming pool. Alarming these vulnerable areas is an important layer of protection that helps in eliminating swimming pool mishaps. Our Pool Alarm will give you that added layer of protection. Once you've alarmed the exits from your home to the pool don't forget to place a Pool Alarm in the pool. It's like having a security guard by your pool 24 hours a day keeping your family safe from harm. POOL Protector is an electronic monitoring system that automatically sounds an alarm when children or pets fall into your unsupervised pool. It's portable, self-contained and light weight. The unit is simple to operate. Entry into the pool will be detected by the Pool Alarm's electronic sensor, triggering a loud pulsating alarm at the unit and inside your house from the remote receiver. The Pool Alarm installation is very easy. It sits on the pool deck as shown in the picture. It is very easy to use with control button operation and will automatically arm the unit once you are done swimming.

The Pool Alarm comes with a remote receiver with flashing light which can be mounted in your home up to 300 feet from the main unit. It comes with a 12 volt power supply. The Pool Alarm uses 6 D batteries (not included) which should last approximately one year. There is an audible low battery indicator which will sound at the poolside alarm and the remote receiver.

  • Last Resort Fighting

Obviously the instructional video is a joke however I would like to talk about some of the most effective self defense techniques which you can use to protect yourself against an attacker.
Before I getting into specifics I want to stress to you that your main objective is to survive and hopefully walk away unharmed. If you can get away safely by running then by all means do it...The objective is not to hurt or wound your attacker. .but to create a way for you to get away..

Your wallet, watch, jewelry or car are not worth getting beaten up over and are certainly no use to you if you are killed. Weigh up the situation first before using these moves

In a street fight or in an attack there is literally no difference between self defense techniques for women and self defense techniques for men. There are no rules in real life situations. This means you should try and do whatever you need to do in order to stop your attacker and get away as soon as possible. Hair pulling, biting, scratching and eye gouging are all legitimate moves which can give the opportunity to flee.

*Hit First! The first strike will usually decide most encounters so it's crucial that you are the one that moves first. A short sharp punch or kick to the balls or other pressure points is also always a good move. Probably one of the most important self defense techniques is to make sure YOU hit first. If you get hit first, you'll put yourself in a weak position and take away the element of surprise. Your chances of landing a good strike will be greatly reduced and not to mention the fact that you might be knocked out or in serious pain. The main advantage of striking first is that you have the chance to end the confrontation before you get hurt. You will either take the perpetrator down completely or at least give them soething to think about....most criminals prefer and easy target and are not looking to get hurt themselves.

Men, for some reason, still try and use regular fighting tactics, punches to the head and body, even in a self defense situation.

Guys this a bad move for 2 main reasons.

    - the attacker will be expecting it, making it highly likely that they will block it or at the least deflect some of the impact.
    - I know this will be a blow to most guys ego's, but most regular guys don't hit hard enough to take someone out with this one strike. If you hit the assailant and they don't go down, you better know how to fight!

Probably the most underrated of the best self defense techniques for men is to remember to keep your guard up if you get into a fighting situation. Most regular guys don't do this which is a pity because even if you don't block a punch fully, if you're able to take even a bit off the impact, the blow will be severely mitigated.
*Move around!! don't stay still!!!  People tend to freeze in these situations. dont Even if you’re not an athlete or trained in self-defense, you have the capabilities to fight someone off. Inexperienced fighters are prone to standing still, so remember to utilize all available body parts, like your knees, elbows, and legs.and havve a basic understanding of pressure points..This way you can protect yourself without overexerting.Try to stay as calm as possible and pay attention to position of the attacker to determine the best place to strike if they provoke you. For instance, do not step in closer to hit their nose with your hand if you’re in the right spot to reach their knee with a kick.

*Use whatever you have as a weapon..One of the simpliest forms of self defense can be whatever you have in your hand at the moment. Carry your keys in your hand  keys can be used in a variety of ways, they can be placed between the fingers so that you can punch out to facial targets especially the eyes, they can be attached in a bunch to a Kubotan type key ring and used in a slashing manner, there are also hard plastic items, like the heart attack  that go right on your keychain and are designed to be self defense weapons..  From here the weapon can be used in a slashing and stabbing fashion to the soft target areas of the face, throat and groin..

remember the objective is to get away safely....very few of us are experts in self defense.....hit first hit hard and get away
